A commitment to cleaner air for everyone
Air pollution is responsible for up to 40,000 early deaths and a cost of up to £20 billion to health services and businesses every year in the UK. The SPF Clean Air programme is split into two waves of work.
What are Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ)
To help clear London’s air, the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year, except Christmas Day (25 December). The zone operates across all London boroughs, and does not include the M25.

Why does ULEZ exist?
Poor air quality, mainly caused by polluting vehicles, is impacting the health of Londoners.
How the ULEZ helps clear London’s air
The aim of the ULEZ is to help improve air quality by reducing the number of vehicles in London that don’t meet emissions standards.
Check if your vehicle meets the standards
Find out if your vehicle meets emissions and safety standards required to drive in London, or if you need to pay a daily charge.
Alternative transport options
To help clear London’s air, we would prefer if you use a vehicle that meets the emissions standards for essential journeys rather than pay the charge or, where possible, use public transport, walk or cycle.
Offers and promotions
To help clear the city’s air and support Londoners through the ULEZ expansion, the Mayor of London’s £160 million scrappage scheme is providing financial assistance to help take the most polluting vehicles off the road.
